I admit it. I’m a craiglist surfer. If you ever look in the ‘gig’ section you know that most of the listings are for garage bands or even less glamorous opportunities. But every once in awhile there’s something interesting. And that was the case the day I came upon a listing for a new TV show for singers.
The skeptic that I am I figured it was some little thing from some unknown, after all, the term “working title” can mean they’re not sure anybody’s actually on board with the idea yet. So I was surprised to see Mark Burnett’s name (Survivor producer). Clicking through to NBC I discovered the newest network show for singers, “The Voice”…(working title).
I wasn’t particularly intrigued until I read the fine print: this one is actually supposed to be about ‘the voice’, my favorite thing of all! In fact, contestants who make it to the show will perform for the first time in a blind audition where the judges can’t even see them, at least for a bit anyway. Another interesting thing is that this one, unlike other network shows that we’ve seen, is open to anyone over 18 and not just solo acts and they say they’re looking for all genres. The site has added a lot more information since I first found it and I did noticed the new video promo only shows the typical 18-25yr old pop types, but we’ll see.
Originally a show from Holland, “The Voice”…(working title), is set to rival what American Idol was in it’s best seasons. Auditions have just begun in Chicago and will travel to New York, Miami, Nashville, Minneapolis, Austin, LA, and end in Seattle. Which gave me a delicious thought, “Why I just happen to LIVE in Seattle.” So I did what any self respecting voice teacher who has pushed their students to the same fate hundreds of time sshould do….I signed up. (Take THAT fellow teachers. Where’s YOUR audition -UGH!) And I’m going to share the experience with you, however short an experience that may be.
And I guarantee I will win. I will win the satisfaction of not running from what might be an opportunity for the fear that someone else will be more of what they want than I am. I will win the sharpening of my song selection and preparation skills. I will win the benefit of extra exercise I wouldn’t otherwise have given my voice. And, most of all, I will win the chance to do what I love most….I’ll get to sing. Anything extra is just gravy. Anything less is in my own power to lose.
My audition is February 11th in Seattle. Check back or click here to get the blog updates in your inbox or blog reader. And you know I love your comments….and I’m ready for ‘em!
