First of all, big thanks to all of you who have expressed your excitement about our Indie Project. I really want your input on this whole process (indie or not) so please leave your comments at the bottom. No one knows where this is going to go but it should be a fun, educational ride for us all.
How Did We Pick Our Indie?
I work with all sorts of indies but by the time they come to me they’re already, well, indies. But for a while I’ve been wanting to follow the development of someone who was at square one so that those of you who are at square zero can get a feel for if you could do this. I’ve been keeping an eye out for someone to do my Indie Project with but no one really met the criteria, until now. We’ve found a singer that:
- Has no experience as an indie artist
- Has little or no money (how many of us are in THAT boat?)
- Knows nothing about anything it takes to become or succeed as an indie
- Shows personal initiative with this music thang
- Would agree to relinquish ALL control of all areas of the project and try anything
- Would agree to put it all there for the world to watch
Introducing Our Victim...Indie
The singer we’ll be watching through her launch into indie artist-hood is fourteen year old Monica Snyder. Monica has been interested in becoming an independent artist for awhile but has just really gotten serious about it in the last year. Before approaching me about her interest in this project she took it upon herself to learn guitar and start studying voice. She’s been playing around with songwriting and watching what others are doing out there. She feels she’s ready to do more but doesn’t know where to start.
For the benefit of full disclosure, Monica is my daughter. But that’s not why she was chosen. In the end it came down to finding someone we could have total direction of and not everyone was willing to do that. It’s tough! But at least we know her parents will do what we ask.
So Let’s Get Started
Monica wants to gig. But that’s NOT the first step to launching yourself as a successful indie. What is? Establishing your identity as an artist. In our next blog post we’ll run through just how we do that!
