Swimming Pools, Movie Stars and Another Trip to the Doctor

beverly-hillbilliesI’m loading up the family and moving to Beverly; Hills that is.  Ok, so maybe we’re not really moving, but we’re loading up for the trip to get a second opinion on my vocal damage from well known doctor to many stars, Dr. Shawn Nassari.

My fellow SLS instructors agree it’s time to get a real pro to weigh in on the vocal pain I’ve been having.  And I couldn’t ask for a bigger pro than the doctor Nassari who has helped a multitude of million dollar voices.  And after all of the surgery I’ve had this year, I really appreciate a surgeon who would rather not cut.

I’m really hoping it’s something simple, not a cyst or a node.  As a voice teacher and working voice talent, I can’t imagine how I’m going to get by if I get the news that I can’t phonate (make noise) for weeks while I heal.   They say it could be the result of the severe acid reflux that required my first surgery to prevent more damage to my vocal cords. Either way, I’m relieved to be in very capable hands, knowing I’ll finally have an answer in just a few weeks.

Leave a comment with your vocal questions.  I’ll ask the doctor for you!

I have been singing professionally for years, like 60. I am 76 years old and have done ten thousand shows, Cruise lines and Casinos. I do songs like Cara Mia, Orbison, Puckett etc etc. High Range with ease. I can still hit those notes at my age with a great falsetto also, but, Now I am hearing a “Metalic” sound in my playbacks. I listen to my recordings and its in there. Whats going on with my Vocal chords. Over worked? Singing too much? singing too hard? Help please. jon r.

    • Bob Hope’s wife is in her late 80′s (studies the technique I teach) and is still singing like a lark. Despite what many people think, age does NOT kill the voice-bad technique and weakening muscle tone do. So great to hear you’re still out there doing it!

It would be irresponsible to guess what’s going on with your voice without hearing it, but I’d be happy to give you a free skype assessment to give you my professional opinion. Just email me at kim@thevoiceclub.com and reference this post to get it scheduled. One thing that concerns me is if you’ve been using a true falsetto for years. Surgeons who specialize in vocal surgery have found that more damage is done to the cords by using a true falsetto over time than by belting incorrectly like many rock singers do. It can take a long time to hear the damage. Some people only discover it when they go in for a regular ENT appt. It would be a good precaution to have a good ENT take a look. The technique I teach has been proven to prevent and even repair many kinds of vocal damage. Email me so I can take a listen and give you more ideas of what’s going on and what you can do to put a stop to it.
